Has life thrown you a major curveball you wish you could throw back? The airline you booked your holiday with went bust. Your son’s in trouble at school. Your computer crashed and you’ve lost everything.
Yes, some days life just sucks.
You’re stressed out, overwhelmed and can’t think straight.
What can you do when the sh**t hits the fan?
1. Vent then breathe
First up get it out of your system. Cry, yell, wail, wallow, punch the pillow. Let your emotions out! Feel a little better? Now sit still, close your eyes and take ten deep breaths. Simple, yet surprisingly effective.
2. Get it out of your head
Call a friend (the calm collected one – not the one who’ll say OMG that’s SO awful). Talking it out will not only give you ideas on how to sort your situation, you’ll also get perspective (everyone is dealing with tough stuff and you’re not alone). If you really don’t want to talk about it, get it out of your head and onto paper. Don’t worry about it making sense – just write your heart out. The best solutions often arise out of a good brain dump. And if you’re not sure what to do right now, do nothing. It’ll come to you.
3. Ask ‘will this matter a year from now?’
Stuff happens. Things go wrong. Trust that everything will work out. Think about the last time the s**t hit the fan. You’re still here right? Remember, ‘This too shall pass’. It always does. Drop the drama and learn to reframe the situation so you can get a realistic handle on it.
